I often search online for gardening websites and blogs that will provide answers to specific questions that I may have on a certain day. But for the most part, I enjoy watching YouTube Channels which focus on gardening topics. When I drink my first cup of coffee for the day, I will often sit and watch a YouTube video, particularly if it is raining or the temperature is below 40 degrees. Otherwise, you are most likely to find me sitting outside soaking up the sun and sending texts to family and friends.
When I am working in the garden or doing garden related tasks, I like to put on a YouTube video and listen. If I want to see the visual, I will stop for a minute or two and look at the screen on my phone. I have been enjoying the content on garden related YouTube channels for several years. During that time, I have found several that I have subscribed to and look forward to new videos that they publish. There are seven of these that I am recommending to my readers in this blog.
1. Garden Answer
Laura and Aaron are based on the western side of Oregon close to the Idaho state line. Their content provides valuable information, tips and suggestions covering multiple gardening related topics. I have been inspired by their channel and found them to be a resource for landscaping, use of different and new plants, irrigation, cut flower gardening, seed starting, use of planters, tree care, lawn care, and much more. A bonus connection is Laura’s parents own a garden center. Laura often creates video content at the center providing an inside view of how one is operated. Laura worked in the Garden Center in her youth. Click here to read my review of their YouTube channel. 2. MIgardener
Luke is based in Michigan and along with his YouTube channel, runs a seed and garden supply business. I have purchased seeds several times from the MIgardener website. Luke has been gardening since he was very young and has been making gardening videos much of that time. His content provides a ‘how to’ approach to gardening. He describes not only how he does it but will also provide the why he does it that way. Most of his content centers around vegetables and fruit trees. Click here for a direct link to his YouTube channel, MIgardener, or check out the video below.
3. The Rusted Garden
Gary Pilarchik is based in Maryland. Gary authored the book, The Modern Homestead Garden, which he makes available through his website. He also sales seeds and other garden related items. Gary is good at providing step-by-step instructions on how he successfully grows specific vegetables, herbs, fruits and flowers. He presents ideas for creative trellising of vine crops, raised beds and other garden structures. He explains how to lay out a garden arrangement to get the most sun exposure and much more. I have picked up tips from this channel for dealing with pests and diseases. I’ve also learned about fertilizing for best results. 4. Epic Gardening
Based in San Diego, Kevin enjoys gardening year round. I first found his YouTube channel while searching for information about growing herbs. I like his approach, his garden layout, and found the information I was looking for, so subscribed to his channel. One year I wanted to grow Nasturtiums which I had not done before. I learned through Kevin that Nasturtiums grow wild in Southern California and are edible. I grew them that year after watching his videos covering this flower.
One thing I’ve enjoyed about his content is when talking about some vegetables or herbs, he then makes tea or cooks recipes showing how to use these plants. He is a natural teacher presenting the information in an easy to follow and understand manner. Click here for a direct link to his YouTube channel, Epic Gardening, or check out the video below. I also listen to his podcast.
5. Roots & Refuge Farm
My first introduction to Roots & Refuge Farm was a video describing how to build a cattle panel archway trellis for growing cucumbers, melons, beans, etc. I then watched a video where Jessica “Jess” inspired me to grow heirloom tomatoes. After this I learned that the Roots & Refuge Farm was only a couple of hours from where I live and in the same state. I was hooked and have watched Jessica and Jeremiah’s videos devotedly ever since. In 2020, Jessica published a book. I traveled 2 hours south to meet Jess and Miah at a book signing. Their YouTube channel provides practical information about gardening and homesteading but it is so much more. They provide inspiration to every gardener through positivity, a passion for gardening, and a desire to teach and train others to grow their own food.
In 2021, Roots & Refuge Farm moved to South Carolina. Although I was sad to see them leave Arkansas, the move was something they felt necessary to continue moving forward in what they see as their purpose in this life. 6. The Millennial Gardener
Based in North Carolina, the Millennial Gardener has become my go to for information about growing fig trees. As children, my siblings and I were blessed to have an after school baby sitter. Her husband was an avid gardener. Behind his gardening shed was a fig tree. I loved the figs and three years ago decided to start growing my own fig trees. I currently have three: Petite Black, Chicago Hardy, and Brown Turkey. When I decided it was time to start adding fig trees to my garden, I started searching for online resources and The Millennial Gardener popped up in the search.
The content of this channel is not limited to fig trees. There are other fruit trees and vegetables covered as well. However, I have been successful in harvesting delicious figs from my trees and I give much of the credit to the instructions provided by The Millennial Gardener. I have followed his advice in soil mixes, fertilizing, and pruning. And I plan to follow his instructions and hope to be successful in propagating new fig plants soon as well. 7. The Middle Sized Garden
The English Cottage Style Garden is currently experiencing a revival around the world. I like the relaxed look and feel of this type of gardening. In searching for YouTube content that focused on English gardens, I came across Alexandra and The Middle Sized Garden YouTube channel and blog. Based in England, this channel provides a variety of content from a British perspective.
Alexandra visits famous Gardens of Great Britain, as well as smaller scale gardens with national collections of specific plants. She collaborates with YouTube content creators from other countries like the U.S. and Australia to provide interesting and entertaining videos. She interviews master gardeners, garden center growers and others asking questions that help us interpret their knowledge and wisdom into ideas we can use in our own gardens. Click here for a direct link to her YouTube channel, The Middle Sized Garden, or check out the video below.
Summary
These 7 are some of the YouTube channels that I currently follow. I am constantly finding new content providers on YouTube that provide the information I am seeking. This means I will most likely be doing more blogs like this one in the future as I feel my YouTube discovered treasures should be shared with others.
